C., under the Act of March 3, 1879. Editorial Following numerous complaints regarding the in adequate warning signs at the intersection ot Blue Ridge road and the main highway (route 70) we cal led the state highway department m Ashevi le and passed the information which we had received along to them. This is a situation which has caused com plaint from time to time over a long period. Demands by local citizens that a stop and go light be installed at this intersection have been heard, a long with suggestions that reflecting light replace the old type warning signs which are now used there. W. M. Cockill, assistant division engineer, who in vestigated, told the NEWS that so far as the highway department could see this intersection is one of the safest in the area. He pointed out the absence of ob struction in either direction and the warning signs which now are placed on each side of the intersection along highway 70 and the stop signs located on the side road, namely Blue Ridge road. In addition, he pointed out that the railroad had warning signs on each side of the crossing. All of this is true, but we do believe that the present old type signs should be replaced with reflectors on both the main highway and the approaches. Resi dents have told of being blinded by the lights from approaching cars and of being unable to see the slow or stop signs clearly. In our opinion reflecting signs would alleviate the situation and prevent serious accidents at this inter section. JillllllllllllllllltllllllltllHlllllllllllllltlllllllHlillllMlllllllllllltiiailllillllMllll This Week’s Meditation... W. H. STYLES tmiiiitiiiiiiiiiiiiiiHmiiiiiitif wmiiitMiMiiiiiiiimiiiimiiK In Luke 8:14 Jesus says in ex plaining; the meaning of the para ble which he had given about the seed and the sower: “And that which fell among thorns are they, who, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection.” There are many “choking” in fluences with which the Christ ian comes in contact every day. Demanding our attention are frivolous and insignificant things that merely please the senses or serve to kill time, but have no permanent moral or spiritual value. I will not attempt to name these “things.” The individual Christian should be able to recog nize things of real value. As the farmer is able to recognize at once the tares among his wheat, so the Christian should be able to recognize immediately the weeds of Satan when they appear in the garden of his soul. One may sow the best of seed, but unless it is cultivated he will reap a crop of weeds. Almost all of us have the Word of God sown in our hea'-ts every week. But so often we fail to witness any growth of teat Seed. This is because the Word is choked by the “cares an 1 riches and pleasures of this life.” And, as a result, we bring no fruit to perfection. What is the choking thing in your life ? With so many of us, it is that great sin of choosing second bests. God has His best things for the few Who dare to stand the test: God has His second choice for those Who will not have the best. It is not always open sin That risks the promised rest: The BETTER sometimes is the foe That keeps us from the BEST. I want in this short life of mine As much as may be pressed, Os service true for God and man, Help me to get Thy best. I want, amid the victor throng To hear my name confessed, And hear my Saviour say at last, “Well done! you took the best.” S. K.
